The only 2007 presented was the 2007 Zinfandel Lolita Ranch. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by aromas of spice box, ground pepper, ripe strawberries, meat juices, roasted herbs, and damp forest floor. This super-rich, heady wine should drink well for 5-6 years. Martinelli’s Zinfandel portfolio continues to grow, with as many as five different offerings now available. The 2006 and 2007 Jackass Hill Vineyard cuvees were not tasted at this visit. However, the other four wines I tasted, all from steep hillside vineyard sites with the newer plantings planted from bud wood of both the Jackass Hill and Jackass vineyards, were brilliant. They are among the fullest-bodied, headiest, most distinctive Zinfandels made in California.
Bright ruby. Sexy, perfumed scents of black raspberry, cherry preserves, violet and smoky minerals; reminds me of the northern Rhone. Lush black and blue fruit flavors are complicated by floral pastille and mineral notes, picking up soft tannins with air. Very rich but also energetic, finishing with excellent clarity and thrust.
