Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The saturated black/purple-colored 2001 The Dreaming Detective Thompson Vineyard offers muted aromas of blackberries, pepper, licorice, chocolate, vanilla, and espresso roast. Playing it closer to the vest than its two siblings, it is a full-bodied, dense, rich, promising effort. Give it 1-2 more years of bottle age, and consume it over the following decade.
The Dreaming Detective is pure Syrah, largely from the Thompson Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. It is a "Big Gun," aged partially in Haut-Brion barrels. Sizable, and not shy in the alcohol department, there is nonetheless so much fruit and such perfect balance, it comes off as elegant and full of finesse.
