From Napa’s famed Hayne Vineyard, the 2007 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of spring flowers, blackberries, and truffles. Deep, full-bodied, and rich, it is best consumed over the next 7-8 years. Interestingly, winemaker Ehren Jordan said that in 2007 the natural alcohol levels ranged from a low of 15% to the high sixteens, but the wines were easy to vinify, and the freshness, vibrancy, and excellent focus most possess are vintage characteristics. Good dark red. Superripe, slightly high-toned aromas and flavors of berries, spices, coffee, licorice and mocha. Very sweet, thick and even slightly liqueur-like on the palate, conveying a tactile quality and a salty complexity, with a hint of exotic stone fruits emerging with air. Darker fruit notes (suggestive of Petite Sirah?) slowly began to emerge with time in the glass but I find this wine hard to judge today--and not showing quite the verve or definition I found at the outset. For his part, winemaker Passalacqua describes 2007 and 2013 as two 'perfect-ripening vintages.' Drink 2019 - 2029. (ST) 92+
