Its stable-mate, the 2007 El Nido, is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell from the same vineyard sites and it received the same elevage. It, too, has a splendid, nearly ethereal perfume, a full-bodied, voluptuous personality, and unrestrained power. It is a bit more structured than the Clio bottling and will offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2025, perhaps longer although these wines have no track record of longevity. (JM)
A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell, the 2007 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla El Nido, aged for 26 months in new French and American oak, sports a lush, decadent bouquet of crème de cassis and ganache covered blackberries, vanilla, smoke, and coffee bean. Fresh and pure, with fantastic complexity and a polish profile on the nose, the wine is full bodied on the palate with a creamy, yet focused and light texture, superb balance, and a long finish. This seems to lack the depth and structure of the ’06, but is gorgeous nonetheless. I have no idea how this will age, but given the balance, I can’t image it not evolving well for a decade or more.
Glass-staining ruby. High-pitched, complex aromas of raspberry, blackberry, minerals, smoked meat and spices, plus a hint of gingerbread. Rich, round and very sweet; packed with black and blue fruit preserve, Asian spice, candied violet and mineral flavors. Velvety tannins add support to the expansive, palate-saturating fruit flavors. The floral and spice notes come on strong on the finish, which is strikingly fresh and very long. Offers a great combination of depth and vivacity. (JR)
Black currant, espresso, anise and mineral flavors are dark and expressive in this powerful red. Structured, balanced and focused, in the modern style, with a fresh, long finish. (TM)
This Cabernet-Monastrell blend tips the scales at 15.5% and asks you straight out: how big do you like your red wines? It is smoky, sultry and massive, with spicy boysenberry aromas, a deep, syrupy palate and plodding flavors of molasses, roasted berry, cedar plank and herbs. Bullish but drinkble now and over the next few years; probably not one for the cellar. (MS)
