Tasting Notes

This charming Chardonnay from the Macon comes from a small grower. Lionel Rhedon-Marin is a recent graduate of the College of Viticulture in the nearby village of Davaye, where Guffens trained. All of their young-vine fruit is sold in bulk to one of the better negociants, who is pleased to have it, since Lionel is such a careful grower. But their old-vine fruit, all over 45 years of age, is kept for the Domaine wine, which is charming and elegant. On the palate this is focused and bright, with a nice spicy note and lovely acidity, as well as some pretty pear notes. This is not the super-ripe style that is suddenly popular, but is, instead, a balanced, well-made and wonderfully crisp and mineral driven Macon. Only K&L's direct import makes this price possible. For those of you looking for a non-oaked Chardonnay that offers richness and viscousity, this is your go-to Gem. Hints of honeysuckle and apple are underscored by a wet-stone minerality, all of which carries across its clean, crisp, mouthwatering set of flavors and finish. The Bean has deemed this our house Chardonnay for however long it is available. (Jim Barr)

This fantastic white Burgundy is fermented slowly with all natural yeast. The result is a focused wine with pretty pear, spiced apple, balanced acidity and bracing minerality on the clean finish. The vines for this delicious Chardonnay are over 45 years old.

This tows the line between explosively fresh and textured, refreshing yet far from simple. For the price it's one of our best deals in Chardonnay right now.

A very smart buy for a beautifully styled French Macon. I loved the classic aromas of mineral and honeysuckle, no oak treatment Keeps it clean and focused on the palate. Great texture and acidity, while keeping a touch of that creaminess we love. A touch of herb spice and white flower, with a seamless balanced finish. Perfect for those who want a bit of body, but not over the top to keep it refreshing and zippy. A seriously great wine for an amazing price, definitely a crowd pleaser being seriously versatile and food friendly.

If you love French Chardonnay and want something different from the modern fat and oaky wines here's your wine. A great wine for current drinking, medium in weight and very balanced. Minerally in the way only White Burgundies can be and a price that can't be beat.

Lionel Rhedon the owner of this small domaine has a good reputation as a grower and sells most of his fruit to negociants. What he does not sell, all of his old vines (45 years or older), go into this wine. The wine is very traditional, balanced with good acidity a touch of minerality. The care given to the vineyards is clearly expressed in the purity of the orchard fruit with pear playing a dominant note. On the finish , which is terrific, there is a real nice mineral note that is almost flintly. This is the perfect wine for the summer, just as an aperitif or with a lighter fare off of the BBQ. This shrimp, fish, poultry vegetables….. boy am I hungry.
