The 2004 Panoplie is a blend of 69% Mourvedre, 21% Grenache, and the rest mostly Syrah with a touch of Counoise. This wine is showing fabulously well out of bottle, with complex earthy, gamey, smoky notes of burning embers and charcoal as well as black cherry and black currant fruit. The wine is broad, full-bodied, powerful, and rich. It is a beautiful homage to the famed luxury cuvee called Jacques Perrin from Chateau Beaucastel. (RP)
Ruby-red. Deep, musky aromas of black fruits, leather, espresso and flowers. Fat, lush and sweet, with superconcentrated kirsch-like flavor offering outstanding volume as well as great creamy depth. I would have picked this blind for grenache. Finishes impressively long, with fine, dusty tannins. Even sweeter than the Esprit normale, and showing more early sex appeal. (ST)
The 2004 Panoplie catches Tablas Creek at an earlier stage in its history when things were much more in development. The 2004 Panoplie is quite exotic, with an Amarone-like sweetness that runs through the fruit. Dried herbs, mocha and leather are some of the notes that open up over time, but it is the wine's distinct sweetness that is the main signature. (AG)
