Bob Steinhauer, one of the most talented viticulturists of Napa Valley's modern history, developed this vineyard in 1990 during his tenure at Beringer. The vines, planted in a red, iron-rich soil, are surrounded by woodlands, which seem to give the initial scent to the wine of fresh eucalyptus. Air transforms the aroma into something more floral, like zinnia, along with the foresty red cherry flavor that brings a sunny day in the mountains to mind. Underneath, the tannins have a deep mineral savor; their power adds to the textural richness as well as to the wine's restraint. Structured to age ten years or more, the tension between the wine's flavor detail and polished surface will sustain it. A beautiful red for lamb chops.
My two favorite single-vineyard wines included the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Steinhauer Ranch from Howell Mountain, which exhibited full-bodied power, voluptuous texture, lots of creme de cassis, black raspberry fruit, a hint of graphite and vanilla. (RP)
Good medium ruby. Highly aromatic nose of cassis, blackberry and violet. Rich, layered and complex, with sweet flavors of dark berries and minerals. The wine's ripe tannins are supported by its terrific depth of fruit. Classic cabernet sauvignon, and another superb 2004 example from Howell Mountain. (ST)
