Good Chardonnay, rich and ripe and steely. That metallic thing shows up both in the crisp acidity and in the stony, pebbly tang that adds a piquant freshness to the pineapple, lime tart, tangerine and smoky custard-cream flavors.
Vivid yellow-gold. Musky pear skin and quince aromas are complemented by iodine and smoky minerals. Powerful orchard fruit flavors are braced by zesty minerality and pick up a bitter lime pith quality with air. Dense and chewy chardonnay with strong finishing grip and lingering minerality.
The 2008 Chardonnay Estate showcases the tropical fruit component that emerges from these Russian River vineyards. Fresh and delineated, it appears Tom Rochioli is trying to move away from any noticeable oak, and give the wine more minerality and delineation.
Lots of terrior and tingle here! So much livelier than the average California Chardonnay. Very round and dangerous with lots of sweetness underneath. Not at all burgundian with just a hint of popcorn but well made and not flabby. A welcome addition to the range of flavours available. I could imagine this partnering very happily with richly sauced fish dishes. 17/20 points.
