The 1997 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is in the early stages of its maturity, as one might reasonably expect from a 15-year-old wine. Overall, the 1997 is a touch slender next to some of the other wines in this lineup, but it has enough energy and juiciness to drink well for another few years. Crushed flowers and licorice are some of the nuances that add complexity on the soft finish. (AG)
Fabulous Chianti Classico. Wonderful aromas of crushed blackberries and cherries. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish.
Blackish ruby-garnet. Sweet, forceful aromas of plum, tar, spices and chocolate. Dense, substantial flavors are relatively backward for this wine, which is usually the most approachable of the estate selections. But this is loaded with fruit and spice.
