Barrel tasting: The tannins on the finish have a stern attitude, but there's much to admire in this rich, concentrated youngster. Firm, with a chewy core of spicy currant, earth, truffle and cedar.
Good bright medium ruby. Complex aromas of blueberry, blackberry, minerals, licorice, flowers and wild spices. Rich, ripe and juicy, with lovely inner-palate lift. This really expands on the back half, finishing with broad, supple tannins and excellent length. This cuvee, from a 1989 planting, has improved significantly in recent vintages; previously it was more earthy, with tougher tannins.
The Howell Mountain cuvees...came across as more herbal, with distinctive notes of crushed rocks, flowers, and red and black fruits.
