The 2009 Pinot Noir Garys’ is an overt, juicy Pinot, with less in the way of aromatic complexity but more fruit than the Rosella’s, largely owing to the warmer microclimate here. Sensual and caressing through to the finish, the Garys’ bottling is another stunningly beautiful wine from Roar. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019. (AG)
Potent and powerful, fully ripe fruit sits at the center of this very lush and wide-open working, yet there is a fine sense of polish apparent as well, and the wine is as bright and balanced as it is rich. Its insistent, well-articulated themes of sweet cherries are joined by just the right measure of oak, and its minimal, all-but-unnoticeable tannins make it very easy to enjoy now. It should keep for a bit and might even improve for a couple of years, but it is wholly delicious now. *Two Stars*
A big Pinot Noir, explosive in cherry and raspberry fruit, but no mere fruit bomb. The tannins are thick and interesting, there’s plenty of zesty acidity, and there’s something minerally and tangy from the soil. Drink this wine now and over the next 6–8 years, as it gradually ages.
Rich and layered, with firm yet supple mineral, plum, cherry, blackberry and strawberry rhubarb flavors that are slow to unfold, gaining depth and dimension. Drink now through 2020. (JL)
