Bright red. An energetic, focused nose offers raspberry, cherry, fresh flowers, medicinal herbs and Asian spices. Then juicy, powerful and youthfully taut in the mouth, with very good mid-palate depth and expansive red berry flavors. The precise, refreshingly brisk finish leaves behind intense floral and mineral notes, along with a hint of white pepper.
Bold cherry and black raspberry flavors cut through the cool, earthy power of this wine like a shaft of sunlight through the coastal fog. The soft richness of the tannin carries an herbal note, another layer of complexity under the clean, long-lasting fruit. Grown at the Peays' far-coast vineyard in Annapolis, this wine's balance and restraint set it up for aging five years or more.
*Two Stars* Precision rather than potency is the forte of this nicely crafted working, and, as is the case with first-tier Pinot, the wine is at once both rich and light on its feet. It exhibits a good sense of sustained fruity extract, and its neatly laid-on oakiness affords a complementary trim of sweet spice. It is firmed up by a spine of integral tannin and comes with a touch of last-minute heat, but its persistent message is that of fruit rather than ripeness, and it is a sure bet to improve for several years.
