The small-production Syrahs from Washington's slightly eccentric Charles Smith's label K Vintners (aka the K Syrahs) always sell out quickly, which means the 2009 "Pheasant Vineyard" is probably not long for our shelves. From the sustainably-farmed Pheasant Vineyard in the Wahluke Slope AVA, known for its well-drained, gravelly soils. The wine this vintage is incredibly concentrated, particularly for such a cool climate site, but not so much so as to lose the wine's subtler qualities. A spritz of lavender and violet perfume lures you into the center of this wine, which is loaded with blackberry fruit, garrigue and smoked meat, with a vein of gravel running through the center. Silky tannins and a lifted middle. Fantastic and cellar-ready.
