K&L Notes

Based in Bouzy, this small estate producer specializes in Pinot Noir-based Champagne. Edmond Barnaut was one of the first to base his brand outside of Reims and Epernay. He set up shop in Bouzy in 1874. Cellars were dug 15 meters underground and five generations of Barnaut descendants have maintained the quality of the house. Production is currently at about 120,000 bottles. Saignée method rosé from Pinot Noir with 10-15% Bouzy Chardonnay. Eighteen months on the lees.

Last week I had the chance to meet and taste with Philippe Seconde, whose family has been making Barnaut since 1874. They might be the oldest grower-producer in Champagne. This rosé is made in a unique way, with the Pinot Noir that composes 85% of the blend macerated with the skins, and 15% Chardonnay blended in afterwards to give the wine snap and focus. Philippe loves this wine with spicy food, and I can't wait to try it with a big plate of hot wings!

This beautiful Rose is 85-90% pinot noir and 10-15% chardonnay. It has baking spices, deep red fruits and anise on the nose. Dark red plum, cherry and very ripe strawberry on the palate. A rich and full Brut Rose that is great with food. Even steak!
