91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Nuts and Bolts (Syrah) is a rich, textured wine layered with black fruit, licorice, leather and spices, all of which come together in a sumptuous fabric. This is another strong showing from Herman Story, although a little more complexity would be nice. Nuts and Bolts was made from a number of vineyards and aged 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 55% were new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. " (08/11) Herman Story is Russell From's solo project (he partners with McPrice Myers to make Barrel 27, and it's here that his personal style really shines through. The Nuts & Bolts Syrah has a big California personality. It is sourced from Shadow Canyon, Luna Matta, Terra Bella, White Hawk and Larner vineyards and is rich and spicy. It begins the reveal on the nose with scents of cassis, kirsch and blackberry spiked with brown spices, then it opens up full throttle on the palate, with plum, blackberry and smoke dominating right now. Powerfully structured, it promises more complexity with bottle age, but if you like 'em big and strong, decant for an hour now and enjoy with a big slab of meat cooked over an open flame.
