Although the latest vintages of Mon Plaisir are sourced from the eponymous vineyard in Knights Valley, between 1987 and 2006 the fruit came from Gauer Ranch in northern Sonoma County (renamed Alexander Mountain Estate in 1995). The vines were planted in 1980 at altitudes of between 427m and 548m on soils composed of volcanic Kidd series and decomposed shale. An excellent pairing for Dayboat scallops with fresh herbs, this Chardonnay has an array of yellow flowers which dominate the aromatic landscape. A note of honey on the palate is joined by a savoury, salty tone and a chalky layer, culminating in a long, memorable finish. (ED)
The 2006 Mon Plaisir exhibits full-bodied notes of peach, popcorn, brioche, and tropical fruit, medium to full body, beautiful depth, and an enticing purity, without any evidence at all of the botrytis that affected Chardonnay vineyards on the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas Mountains. (RP)
Slightly hazy medium yellow. Rich, buttery aromas of stone fruits, hazelnut and lees. Ripe and fairly fat for this cuvee, with a distinctly glyceral impression and classic dryness. This hints at the typical minerality of this normally Chablis-like bottling but I find this year's release to be a bit less sharply delineated than usual. (ST)
A rich, subtle combination of elegant pear, fig and citrus, with layers of smoky, toasty oak, builds to a complex mix of flavors, with a touch of marshmallow and subtle fruit and oak notes. (JL)
