From the winery’s Phinny Hill vineyard, the Columbia Rediviva is 48% Cabernet Sauvignon and 52% Syrah. Complex and satiny, it’s a riveting wine, inky and bursting with a sensuous mix of berry, cassis, mocha, loam, cinnamon and spice. A smoking good wine, the 2007 Buty Columbia Rediviva Phinny Hill Vineyard, a blend of 52% Syrah and 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, delivers an awesome aromatic display of leafy tobacco, fresh crushed stone, black currant, chocolate, and beautiful background floral nuances that lend complexity, lift and vibrancy. Very Bordeaux like with its edge of wood and firm structure, the wine is full bodied on the palate and perfectly put together, displaying ripe, focused fruit, a seamless, silky texture, solid structure, and an excellent finish. I’m a big fan and this rock star wine should continue to evolve for 3-4 years and drink well for a decade afterwards, if not longer.
Polished, round and complex, this is distinctive and generous with its dark berry, chocolate and pomegranate flavors, melding seamlessly as the finish carries on smoothly. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The berries that informed his Cabernet-Syrah 2007 Columbia Rediviva Phinny Hill Vineyard were so tiny, notes Foster, that extraction proceeded much more quickly than usual and he pressed within 12 days, letting the fermentation finish in barrel. One certainly seems to taste that tiny-berry concentration. Bitter-edged cassis, huckleberry, and seedy black raspberry; green herbs; sprouting lentil; and walnut inform a firm, finely-tannic palate and this finishes with a remarkable sense of focus, energy and lift for a tannic wine of its two cepages, not to mention of 14.5% alcohol. Suggestions of stone and iodine add to the complexity on display here, though, interestingly, – as with the other installments of this cuvee I tasted – the Syrah doesn’t display any of its animal side. Bright medium ruby. Cherry, spices and dusty cocoa powder on the nose, along with a whiff of musky woodsmoke. Lush, silky and rich, with a strong mocha oak component adding to the impression of sweetness, but this shows better mid-palate definition and less of a liqueur character than the Champoux Vineyard blend. Finishes with building, palate-dusting tannins. (ST)
