K&L Notes

San Francisco Chronicle Top 100 Wines of 2012: "The mix of Zinfandel, Carignane, Mourvèdre, Syrah and more from Morgan Twain-Peterson's heritage vineyard right near Valley of the Moon shows the value of keeping century-old vines in the ground. A briary, blackberry-leaf aspect is matched by the spice of volcanic soils, citrus and fresh raspberry. Complex and classic, the pinnacle of California field blends." Let's just say that Bedrock founder and winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson knows what he's doing. Having grown up at Ravenswood winery where he began making wine at age 5, Morgan worked harvest at Hardy's Tintara in McLaren Vale, Australia and worked as a visiting winemaker at Chateau Lynch-Bages in Pauillac before returning to California to focus on revitalizing heirloom California vineyards and make what he defines as "the most unique, distinctly Californian, wine there is." His 2010 "Heirloom" Sonoma Valley Red is a composed of approximately 55% Zinfandel, 25% Carignane, 11% Mourvedre, and 9% old vine Syrah (picked and vinified separately), plus a mixture of other field varieties from Bedrock vineyard. Occupying 152 acres in the heart of Sonoma, Bedrock Vineyard is a California Heritage site. It was founded in 1854, by by Generals William Tecumseh Sherman and Fightin' Joe Hooker, and later replanted in 1888 by Senator George Hearst after devastation by phylloxera. It has been in production for over 150 years.
