K&L Notes

An 88-acre estate, Château de Montfaucon sits just across the Rhône River from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a UC Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe. Over the years, Château de Montfaucon has developed a HUGE following amongst both our staff and customers. Who is the Baron Louis? A seminal figure in the history of Montfaucon, he was responsible for restoring the Château of Montfaucon, saving it from complete ruin at the close of the 19th century. This latest release is produced from 50-to-90-year-old vines on select vineyard parcels on the right bank of the Rhône. This substantial yet elegant red can be enjoyed now, but it will be superb with several years more of cellar time. Try it with heartier fare like sirloin steaks dusted with fresh herbs. There is amazing freshness here for a wine from a vintage that was harvested over 10 years ago thanks to the cool cellars at Chateau Montfaucon where it has spent its whole life. Despite the bottle age this still needs a bit of air to reveal the baked cherry, Thyme, pepper, licorice and warm plum flavors and aromas. This is a complex and alive wine with just a touch of softening around the edges to allow a bit of maturity to peek through. Delicious!

Incredibly spicy nose with exciting cinnamon/clove notes followed by some bacon fat and dried tart cherries. beautiful on the palate, with loads of spices, lavender, incense and bing cherries. With depth and complexity more akin to a Chateauneuf than a Côtes du Rhône.

A beautiful medium bodied wine from a great vintage. The Montfaucon Baron Louis is flavorful and round offering nice fruit that is balanced out with structure and complexity.

Still the staff's absolute favorite for Classic Cote Du Rhone from a small but exceptional producer which we direct import all the way from France! It has the perfect balance of power and elegance, ripe but bright red fruit and savory nuances play through the palate with velvety texture and polished tannins on the finish. Grab some before its gone!

40% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Cinsault, 10% Carignan, 10% Mourvedre, and 10% Counoise. This small vineyard plot "Baron Louis" is an absolutely classic Cotes du Rhone. Black and red fruit, fine tannins, well-balanced acidity with hints of spice, game and leather, this is a food wine you will want to stock up on. Incredible.

A great property that we have brought in direct for many years. Chateau Montfaucon is directly across the river from the prestigious Chateauneuf-du-pape demarcation. The vines that produce the Baron Louis Cuvee are between 60 and 90 years old adding concentration and complexity. This is a classic but serious Cotes du Rhone. On the nose some violets and a slights gamey character. Fruits of the forest and bramble fruit, some dusty earth notes on the palate. Excellent balance and length. This wine really over delivers for a Cotes du Rhone.

This has to be one of my favorite wines in our inventory, as it has been since we have been importing it for the last twenty years. We have told the story of this wonderful chateau so many times, so I will not repeat it again only to tell you that you need to treat this Gem as a Chateauneuf-du-Pape. I threw this exceptional production into a Southern Rhone Valley tasting with my tasting group (Wednesday Night Fatally Flawed Palates) in January, and of the eight wines, it tied for second, beating out Vieux Telegraph, Andre Brunel, and Domaine Grand Veneur’s Lirac, “Clos De Sixte.” Medium-deep ruby in color, the nose explodes with wild red plum to anise to cassis fruit notes. Balanced, rich, lush, broad, full, deep flavors of the same with wonderful complexity and integrated, silky, very fine tannins lead to a long, delicious finish that refuses to give up. Rusty has designated this Gem as our house red for the month and beyond. 14.0% ABV (Jim Barr)

If the winery was on the other side of the river - this would be exceptional chateauneuf du pape and cost three times as much. As it stands, this wonderful bottle from the old montfaucon estate is $18 and the best cote du rhone in the store. World class winery, great vintage, under $20!
Top Value! Drink from 2012 to 2022
