The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques 1er Cru is an absolute joy to behold and in terms of drinking now a sheer pleasure, surpasses both the 1996 and 2005 tasted the previous day. It bursts with pixelated red cherry and strawberry fruit on the nose, laced with minerals and light citrus scents. The palate is powerful and certainly not dense. Yet it possesses disarming transparency and fabulous precision, weightless yet paradoxically intense with a long tail on the finish. It is more a Clos Saint-Jacques of texture and feeling than obvious fruit descriptors. Wonderful. Drink through 2038. (NM)
A discreet touch of wood frames an aromatically fresh, ultra elegant, spicy and bright nose of intense pure pinot fruit, cherry and raspberry notes where both the spice and earth notes continue onto the delicious, rich and full-bodied flavors built on a base of concentrated minerality and stunning length. This is one classy wine that offers impeccable balance and a Zen-like poise.
The ’08 Clos St. Jacques was much more closed down and reserved than the Clos des Ruchottes in November, but its quality is also outstanding. The bouquet is deep and very classy, as it offers up scents of red and black cherries, chocolate, a touch of meatiness, fresh herbs, complex soil and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, fairly closed down and extremely elegant, with a rock solid core of fruit, fine-grained tannins, lovely acidity and very fine length and grip on the complex and classic finish. A superb bottle in the making. Drink between 2016-2045. 93+
The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques is an unusually warm, pliant 2008. The use of 80% new barrels here undoubtedly contributes to the wine’s open, generous expression of fruit. The Clos St. Jacques is a beautiful wine, even at this early stage. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038. (AG)
Medium red. Complex, scented nose combines cherry, raspberry, dried flowers, spearmint and underbrush, along with a sexy element of smoky oak. The sweetest of these 2008s to this point and downright plump for 2008. A wonderfully chewy, tactile, soil-driven wine with sharp definition to its flavors of red fruits, minerals, spices and earth. Showing more weight and palate presence than the grand crus that preceded it in my tasting. Finishes subtle and long, with a great light touch. This will need six or seven years in the cellar. 92+
