There are a whopping 30 barrels (approximately 750 cases) of the 1999 Cote Rotie. It boasts a saturated black/purple color as well as a glorious nose of over-ripe blackberries, cassis, violets, and vanillin. Unctuously-textured, unbelievably fat and dense, with a texture and richness not dissimilar from some of the profound 1947 Pomerols, this low acid wine is almost over the top, but so rich, concentrated, and pure it should provide head-turning levels of pleasure and joy for 20-25 years. Medium ruby. Great nose combines gunflint, bacon fat, roasted tomato, violet, mocha, brown spices and pepper. Extremely firm today and a bit dominated by its tannic structure and brisk acids, but this primary, palate-staining wine offers great sappy verve and peppery persistence. Hasn't yet opened on the back end, but should be spectacular with seven or eight years of bottle aging. The alcohol is a full 13%, but there's no sign of overripeness. (ST)
Complex, sexy and classy, with blackberries, wild raspberries, Asian spices, grilled meat and rose petals--but it is also a bit earthy. Medium-bodied, the tannins are well-integrated, with an elegant finish. (PM)
