Tasted just prior to bottling, the 2009 Paul Lato Syrah Cinematique Larner Vineyard, aged for 19 months in 33% new French oak, is slightly less exotic than the Bien Nacido and exhibits gorgeous black and red fruits, grilled beef, lead pencil, and serious crushed rock and liquid mineral like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and impeccably balanced, with an elegant profile, beautifully concentrated mid-palate, and firm, polished tannin on the finish, this captivating Syrah should drink well for 10-12 years. The '09s from Paul are both unbelievably good and count yourself lucky if you were able to latch on to a few bottles.
Spicy, with black pepper and minerals. Licorice and hints of sandalwood. Full-bodied, with an amazing finish. Superb finish. Fabulous. What a finish! About 5% Viognier in the blend. Better in 2014.
Inky ruby. Explosively perfumed bouquet evokes dark berry preserves, cola, violet and Indian spices, along with an exotic suggestion of apricot. Broad, sappy and intense, with serious thrust to its sappy blackberry and mulberry flavors. Finishes juicy, sweet and long, with lingering floral and spice notes. The malo stretched into May 2010 for this wine as well as for the Il Padrino. (JR)
