Picking the best of the present Duckhorn offerings is a difficult if thoroughly enjoyable task, but this very well-balanced wine challenges for the head of the class by dint of its very deep fruit, its complexity and its impeccable structure. Smelling of ripe cherries, loamy earth and cream-sweetened coffee, it follows on the palate with broad, slightly open flavors that pick up on the themes of ripe fruit and lovely oak. It shows a tag-end of tannic astringency in the latter going, but it never dries, and its bent to toughness does no more than suggest that this one is bound to get better with five years of age.
Well-balanced, with a supple texture and rich currant, anise, cedar, berry and spice, with hints of vanilla and toast. Long, complex aftertaste. (JL)
