K&L Notes

There is not a lot of old-vine Mourvèdre in Sonoma County, yet Mike Officer discovered a two-acre plot of mostly Mourvèdre that was planted back in 1910. It was somewhat neglected when he found it in 1996, but reviving it and replanting missing vines has brought it back to a respectable level of production (296 cases in 2008). An old-vine gem! From the winery's tasting note: "Medium-dark to dark garnet-ruby. A sexy bouquet of raspberry, kirsch, bittersweet chocolate, and cardamom is highlighted by a suggestion of rose petal. Medium full-bodied, the palate explodes with berry fruit, tree bark, and orange peel. With aeration, a note of smoked game emerges. Very complex! While slightly richer than the 2007, lively acidity keeps the wine fresh and vibrant. Like many Mourvèdre-based wines, this will age very well. Drink from late 2012 through 2022." (MRO, 08/01/10)
