Tasting Notes

Leoville Barton has developed an unparalleled reputation for crafting astounding wines that are highly rated but still reasonably priced. The Reserve de Leoville is their 2nd label. It's fantastic now (open early to give it some time to breathe), and it will most certainly age well into the next century. Deep garnet color, ripe-currant, and mineral aromas; good core of fruit finishing sweet and long on the palate; depth and balance; classic mineral, currant, and mint flavors. Robert Parker... 'For whatever reason, Leoville-Barton rarely receives the attention it merits. Given the number of great wines that have emerged from this estate since World War II, it is a terribly underrated chateau. Moreover, since Anthony Barton assumed control of the property in the mid-eighties, prices have continued to be among the most sensitive and pro-consumer of any Bordeaux estate. Leoville-Barton is a wine that seems to synthesize the cedary, blackcurranty, full-bodied richness of Pauillac with the finesse and elegance of St.-Julien.'

The Leoville Barton estate had one of the great successes of the 1994 vineyard in Bordeaux, and that success extended to this very good 2nd label, the Reserve De Leoville Barton. This wine is still virile and powerful at 23 years old, and I expect has considerable time in hand. This dark, curranty St. julien shows plenty of Cabernet fruit, and still has good tannin and bright cut. I bought some for home and I am looking forward to having it with prime rib, Yorkshire Pudding and all the fixings!
