K&L Notes

We are thrilled to begin working with the oldest bodega in all Rioja, a winery whose traditionally styled wines may not be well known (yet) but surely will become so after people taste how good they are. Based in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos, Bodegas de la Real Divisa (whose wines sell under the name Marques de Legarda) is not only the oldest bodega in all of Rioja, with a history of vine growing stretching back to the 14th century, but to our knowledge one of the oldest wineries in the world. This important and historical bodega produces wine from their own 30 hectares of vines, primarily Tempranillo with some Graciano and Mazuelo, all located in Abalos.

So classicly Rioja with the dark cherry fruit, this $14 crianza over delivers with copious amounts of earth, incense and beautiful baking spices.

Produced mostly from Tempranillo, this lovely, well-balanced, harmonious Rioja from the oldest bodega in that wine producing region provides a highly perfumed nose of cranberries and mulberries, with distinctive undertones of violets, cedar, citrus, and a dusty minerality. Medium-full in body, this complex Gem shows excellent integration of very fine, silky tannins with superb structure and depth of character. Its long, fleshy finish seems to last forever. This Gem, according to Rusty, will be one of our house reds for the month and for the next three to six years.13.5% ABV

I still can't believe that this Rioja is only $14.99, but that's not to say that I'm complaining. These days, with another baby on the way, I'm looking for values to drink (when I can drink again--thank goodness I can still taste) more than ever. There's a lot packed into this bottle: spice, cherry fruit and leathery accents to name a few. This has a grippy, full texture and a savory, old school structure. Excellent.

Our visit to Legarda was one of the most interesting visits to a winery I have ever experienced. Likely the oldest operating winery in Spain and maybe even Europe, this place exudes history. The wines however are timeless. Classic Rioja with a slightly modern tact, the basic Crianza is bright with red fruit flavors, earthy loamy notes and a hint of cocoa in the finish. Great length and finish, this is a winery to jump on board with.

What a delicious, textbook traditional style Rioja! Marques de Legarda is that super rare breed of Rioja that both reflects the style of a single village (in this case, the Rioja Alta village of Abalos)as well as the time honored traditional approach of blending tempranillo with a few other grape varieties (here, mazuelo and graciano)and ageing the wines carefully in American oak then in bottle prior to releasing. Spicy, red berry fruits are balanced by the refreshing acidity of the 2008 vintage. This balance combines with sufficient tannins and stuffing to age an additional 5-6 years. We are proud to be directly importing such terrific values from this historic bodega.
