Located in the prestigious Oakville district of the Napa Valley, Nickel & Nickel has specialized in the production of single vineyard, single varietal wines since the winery was founded in 1977 by the partners of Far Niente. Cabernet Sauvignon can vary widely in expression based factors such as soil type, micriclimate, and exposure, and it is very interesting to taste the different vineyard terroir expressions in each bottling, despite how close some of these vineyards are to one another. The Kelham Vineyard is located on the west end of Oakville, in the lower foothills where the soil is well-drained clay loam. Clay soils retain water and often yeild denser, fuller wines. Warm days and cool nights here ensure that Cabernet ripens slowly and evenly over a long growing season, yielding a wine with depth and richness. Aged for sixteen months in 53% new French oak (the rest once-used) the 2009 "Kelham Vineyard" Cabernet displays classic Oakville ripeness and intensity of flavor, smooth yet supporting tannins, and accents of toasty oak spice. It glides accross the palate and finishes with lingering flavors of ripe cassis and smoky earth.
