A deep, inky wine, the 2009 Syrah Bien Nacido completely saturates the palate with blue/blackish fruit. Savory notes appear over time, but the 2009 remains dominated by its power, depth and structure. Not a shy wine by any means, the 2009 is going to require at least a few years in bottle, but it is striking, even today. (AG)
The 2009 Syrahs are impressive across the board and a significant step up from his 2008s. Starting off, the 2009 Syrah Bien Nacido is a classic example of the vineyard with its deep, dark and smoky fruit, toasted nut, pepper, mineral and underlying meatiness. This medium to full-bodied beauty has brilliant detail and focus on the palate, with superb mid-palate concentration and layers of tannin that frame the finish. (JD)
Bright purple. Heady aromas of boysenberry, licorice, cracked pepper and violet. Sweet and intense on the palate, offering strong dark berry, plum and Indian spice flavors and a hint of woodsmoke. Shows a suave combination of juiciness and concentration and finishes on a sexy floral note, with velvety tannins and impressive length.
*One Star* Somewhat pushy herbaceous notes distract at first, but just a bit of time in the glass brings out solid and entirely convincing fruit-driven notes of blackberry, varietal spice and an enriching hint of bacony oak. The wine is full on the palate and somewhat supple but veers away from any sense of corpulence and firms up at the back from a combination of underlying acidity and youthfully coarse tannins. Useful now with sturdy roasts and chops, it will round out with five years in bottle.
