The 2008 Syrah Cumulus Vineyard is impeccably silky and refined. Dark fruit, camphor, licorice, smoke and mocha flesh out in this gorgeous, delineated wine. The 2008 impresses for its length and persistence. Today, the 2008 is more refined and elegant than when I tasted it a year ago. The 2008 is 82% Syrah, 13.5% Grenache and 4.5% Roussanne (all destemmed) that spent approximately 32 months in French oak. (AG)
A dark, brooding wine, the 2008 Next of Kyn - No. 2 packs a serious punch. Black cherry, gravel, graphite, smoke, licorice and dark spice convey an impression of gravitas that is reinforced by the wine’s deep, vertical structure. Although the 2008 can be enjoyed now with air, it needs at least another few years in bottle to fully unwind. This retrospective tasting provided a great opportunity to revisit the first seven releases of Manfred and Elaine Krankl’s Next of Kyn. As compelling as the Krankls’ Sine Qua Non wines are, I have always found Next of Kyn to be just as fascinating, especially in recent years. This vertical only served to reinforce that impression. Glass-staining purple. Hypnotic, intensely perfumed scents of fresh red and dark berries, fruitcake, cola and patchouli, with sexy floral and Indian spices notes gaining power with air. Lush, creamy and expansive, boasting superb precision to its raspberry and mulberry flavors. Closes on a sweet floral pastille note, with excellent focus and sweet persistence. (JR)
A dark, rich, gutsy effort, with firm, muscular notes of dark berry, smoked meat, soy, hot brick, pepper and bacon fat. All in all, this is a striking panoply of flavors beautifully proportioned, yet it is so dense and concentrated, it's best to cellar and decant for sure. New from Manfred Krankl of Sine Qua Non. Syrah, Grenache and Roussanne. (JL)
