K&L Notes

This second wine of Château Cantemerle is primarily sourced from younger vine parcels from the esteemed estate. The wine has a similar profile to the Grand Vin, but is ready to drink within several years of harvest. That's now! A quick decant reveals generous fruit and and good terroir that is always welcome for under $20. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Even as a second wine, grapes were individually hand sorted before fermentation, and the wine spent 12 months in 20% new French oak before bottling. Second wines also shine in 2009!

What a fabulous buy from my favorite vintage. This is the last 100 cases available anywhere. Baby Cantemerle with a toasty edge and sweet fruit flavors. We have sold about 6000 bottles so far. We have magnums too.
    Drink from 2017 to 2022

Steak & Claret is a sacred weekly tradition here at K&L, so choosing a good claret is a task we do not take lightly. That's why I was reluctant to choose this sub-$20 2nd label from 5th Cru Cantemerle last Friday. I'm so glad I did! Ripe and powerful black currant, blueberry fruit with subtle minty herb notes, and the perfect amount of toast and oak. It was the star of the meal, which is impressive considering it cost less than the steak. This is one value to case up on.

This little wine is developing wonderfully after 5 years and by my guess it still has another 8-10 years left in it. Currently showing notes of dark flowers, dark berries, black currant, dried herbs and a splash of demi-glace. This is a ridiculously good bottle of wine without contemplating the price point but for twenty bucks, it doesn't' get much better - crazy value here.

A fantastic 2nd wine filled with warm, dusty baked cherry and milk chocolate character. This is floral and herbal with a long, gentle finish. A classy, drinkable bargain.

5 years past release and this is still one of the best values from Bordeaux at this price point. The second label of Fifth Growth Chateau Cantemerle, the 2009 Les Allées exhibits such obvious character and class the pedigree is self-evident. And, of course, it doesn’t hurt that 2009 is one of the top vintages of the decade. The quality and size of the crop was such that second labels offer even better than usual value. ’09 was also a big Cabernet vintage, and at nearly two thirds of the blend it really shines through here. Just a hint of violets on the nose, sweet, ripe blackberry and cassis notes on the palate, and ultra fine, silky smooth tannins to finish. This is already drinking beautifully, but can easily be cellared and enjoyed with continued pleasure over the next decade.

The Les Allees de Cantemerle 2009 is a great value wine giving you a large amount of what you get in the first wine for a bargain price. Pretty rich and great power for a wine in this range with lovely rose petal notes over deep dark fruit. Plenty of black spices and a nice note of minerality finish it off.
    Top Value!

Maximum pleasure for the absolute minimum price possible. This might literally be the best $20 you can spend in the store right now. Everything that's great about the 2009 for a fraction of the price of the big boys. Wonderful depth and fruit, but with the classic earthy quality we expect from Cantemerle. If I could I would be buying stacks of this wine and planning to drink it over the next 10 years, but it's so delicious today I end up taking it home by the bottle one by one. Either way, you cannot lose here if you love old-school Bordeaux.

Beautifully floral on nose, heady with violets, plus coffee, leather and slight smoke through the palate, this is classic Bordeaux from a reliably awesome producer at an incredible price. I took a bottle home the same day I tasted it – Les Allées de Cantemerle is just too good to pass up.

Dark crimson with hints of violet color. Wow... Tobacco, mushroom, cocoa, along with dark cherries and berries and sure enough...earth! On the palate, all of that, with black olives and cocoa more pronounced. The tannins and acidity are very much present without any sign of harshness. On the contrary, this wine is refined and elegant, surely showing the pedigree of a very classy 2nd wine from a classified cru.
