Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2010 Syrah, from two sites in Bennett Valley, is a stunning value in handcrafted, artisan Syrah. Layers of cool, mineral-infused dark fruit caress the palate in this delineated, nuanced wine. Vibrant and intensely perfumed, the 2010 impresses for its overall balance and harmony. This is a relatively forward, juicy style of Syrah, but all the elements are in the right place. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. (AG)
Tight and powerful, with a firm mix of espresso, dried berry, graphite and mocha. Shows a cedary, woody side too, clamping down on the tannic finish. Drink now through 2020. (JL, Web-2013)
Carlisle has quietly earned a fine reputation among fans of old-vine Zinfandel, as well as those who seek out alluring single-vineyard Syrah. Here, Mike Officer blends a few of his far-flung vineyard sources to make a (mostly) Sonoma County cuvée that's just a little easier to get on your table than the others. Winemaker's notes: "Using organically grown Syrah and Mourvèdre from the Rossi Ranch in Sonoma Valley, we found that blending in Syrah from Ray Teldeschi's vineyard in Dry Creek Valley produced a wine of great intensity and concentration. But aromatically, something was missing. Fortunately, we discovered the solution – 6% Rosella's Syrah and 13% Bennett Valley Syrah. Both of these components added intriguing notes of violet, white pepper and spice. In the end, a killer Syrah. And even better, at a killer price! Unfined and unfiltered."
