Tasting Notes

Chateau Pellehaut has been one of our top direct imports for the past year here at K&L. We've visited the Tenereze producer twice over the past few years, always finding something new to bring home for our brandy fans. Big, spicy, woody flavor explodes right off the bat from this 21 year old, 50% brandy. This is another crossover Armagnac, the one you'll want to buy if you like Bourbon and think Armagnac might be something you want to try. The raisiny fruit aspect of the Folle Blanche comes in on the finish, but this is all about the concentration of the wood and the spice. $80 for all this punch. And someone actually emailed me last week to say that most Armagnac was a rip-off! Come on, man!

It's back and tasting as great as ever. It feels in some ways to be a combination of the 2001 and the 2000. It boasts big cocoa and stone fruits, but also picks up a molasses character that isn't in either of the younger bottles. That earthier sugar feel in some ways mirrors the burnt sugar of the '01. The really incredible thing about the '96 is how fresh and clean it is on the palate. It feels lighter somehow, but without giving up any of the power of its younger brethren.

Now at 21 years of age and at 50%, this is one of the most legendary vintages of Pellehaut we've ever carried and I was under the impression it was all done. Apparently not! My buddy Charles was able to go back and snag a few more cases for me, which is exciting to say the least. This 1996 is the ULTIMATE bourbon crossover. In fact, if you poured this for me blind there's no way in hell I would ever guess brandy. Anyone who tells you differently is lying. This is pretty much a 100 proof bottle of 21-year-old bourbon that happens to come in a French Armagnac bottle. It's monstrously powerful, bold and assertive, loaded with spice and absolutely saturated in oak. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this to traditional Armagnac fans. I would however jump up and down trying to convince bourbon fans to at least try a bottle. The Folle Blanche flavors have definitely become more nuanced with age.

This fantastic armagnac has beautiful expressive aromas that are inviting and pleasurable. The 1996 Pellehaut is elegant and complex with layers of flavors. There is a lot of quality for this great price.
