I have often found Taurasi to be a brooding, mysterious wine, ensconced in a sheath of tannins that make it impenetrable for the average human to understand. Yet in recent years winemakers and grape growers in the south of Italy are beginning to understand more and more about how to grow, make and age the powerful Aglianico grape. Upon first tasting this wine I was truly struck by the central palate focus and brightness, this gives the wine freshness, elegance and essential length. The tannins emerged slowly, are extremely fine grain and supremely well integrated into this powerful wine. Only then did the aromatics catch up and with layers of sour cherries, plums and a hint of smoke swirling around my head and the majesty of this wine became truly apparent. Yet when I say powerful that might conjure up the wrong impression. This wine’s true strength is in its length and balance, yes the aromas and flavors are truly superb and show a level of complexity that I haven’t experienced before in Aglianico. Powerful yes it is, but never out of control it feels like you just got the keys to a Ferrari. Molettieri is grows all of his grapes organically and the wine is aged for 48 months partially in barriques and then in large Slavonian oak barrels. This is something you won’t want to miss….now or 20 years from now!
    Drink from 2013 to 2033
