Bright gold. Candied orange, poached pear, honey and iodine on the powerfully scented nose. Fleshy and broad but energetic, offering palate-staining orchard fruit flavors and a smoky mineral underpinning. Shows very good depth and focus, finishing with impressive energy and an echo of smoky minerals. This is the first bottling from this 7.5 acre, south-facing vineyard, which was planted in 2008 to Calera, Mount Eden and Wente clones.
The 2011 Chardonnay Ross Station Estate comes from Old Wente and Hudson clones, and was aged 15 months in new French oak. A Meursault-like Chardonnay, it offers up aromas of roasted hazelnuts, honeysuckle, peach marmalade and a touch of smoke. This full-throttle, surprisingly rich, heady Chardonnay should drink nicely for 3-4 years.
