Layers of tropical fruit, white truffles, almonds and dried pears flow effortlessly from the 2011 Chardonnay Chuy Vineyard. This is an unusually dense, concentrated wine for the Sonoma Coast, particularly in this vintage. Elements of exoticism give the Chuy much of its beguiling, captivating personality. Chuy was planted in 1964. The head trained vines are dry farmed. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021.
(from a 1964 planting dry-farmed on St. George rootstock on a terraced hillside above Glen Ellen; this fruit previously went into Kenwood's chardonnay): High-pitched, very subtle aromas and flavors of crystallized lemon peel, apple, hazelnut oil, menthol and medicinal herbs. Sweet, layered and musky but still quite wound up in the mouth, with its 14.1% alcohol nicely buffered by bright acidity. Finishes with very good length. Hands off for at least a year or two.
