Another full-bore California Syrah, Tensley’s 2012 Syrah Colson Canyon has a ripe, sweet and decadent style. Loaded with cassis, pepper, smoked meats and melted licorice, it has no hard edges, overflowing sweet fruit and a polished feel. It pushes the sweetness level, and won’t be for everyone, but it has loads of charm and is a joy to drink. (JD)
Inky purple. Pungent dark fruit liqueur, cherry-cola and potpourri on the deeply scented nose, with hints of smoky minerals and black pepper adding complexity. Lush cassis and cherry compote flavors show impressive power, with exotic candied violet and Indian spice qualities building in the glass. Dusty tannins add grip to a long, sweet, and penetrating finish. A rich and lively wine. (JR)
The 2012 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is the most voluptuous of these Syrahs from Joey Tensley. Raspberry jam, wild flowers and sweet spices are some of the many notes that race out of the glass. Shaped by the warm microclimate, the 2012 is extroverted to the core, with a real sense of glycerine and weight that are among the most prominent signatures. There is plenty of near and medium-term appeal in this flashy Syrah. (AG)
