Deep saturated ruby. Multidimensional nose of great purity and complexity: cassis, rose petal, minerals, truffle and a suggestion of minty austerity. Great precision and intensity in the mouth; this has that tightly coiled spring of great young Burgundy. Framed and sweetened by new oak but not at all obviously oaky. Extraordinary, slow-building finish shows great sap and verve. (ST)
The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Charmes-Chambertin has a mouth-watering nose of Asian spices, blackberries, and black cherries. This luscious, opulent, medium to full-bodied wine is creamy-textured and refined. Loads of red cherries, spices, candied raspberries, and touches of sweet oak can be found in this luxurious offering. It has an awesome depth of fruit as well as loads of exquisitely ripened, supple tannins. Additionally, this wine has an exceptionally long, pure finish. (PR)
Remarkably given that this is now fully 18 years of age the nose remains almost completely primary with hints of menthol and wood to the spicy, earthy and softly gamy red and dark currant fruit aromas. There is excellent density, size, weight and power to the relatively full-bodied flavors that are supported by still very firm tannins on the strikingly persistent finish. This beautifully well-balanced yet markedly serious, indeed even brooding effort is nowhere near its apogee and is going to require at least another decade to reach it. Patience required but this beauty should very much be worth the wait. Try from 2029+
