K&L Notes

It is funny to call this the "new" Charles when it actually has more old wine in it--especially in magnum! The first difference between this wine and the old label is that it's made from just 60 vineyard sites in Champagne rather than the previous 120. It is still composed of a third each Chardonnay, Meunier and Pinot Noir and includes 40% reserve wines that average 10 years of age, up from the eight year average previously. This Charles has more of the depth and power that fans of the Charles have come to love, but also much more freshness and elegance--a coup for a wine that is actually older. This is a great bottle multi-vintage Champagne for the price and a testament to the blender's art. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

Layered and heady, this Brut Champagne is composed mostly of reserve wines dating back to the 1990s, yet still shows a crisp core of minerality, with a satisfyingly long finish. There's even that coveted hint of brioche character. This format is perfect for aging, and the price is a steal for a House of this caliber.

The magnum of the Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve is even better than the Champagne in .750 which is truly a statement. The .750 is rich and opulent but the magnum lends yet another overlaying note of refined elegance to the package. It is often repeated that Champagne is best made in magnums, and this bottle is definitely an argument to that truth.

When I started working for K&L and was introduced to real Champagne I was told that it tastes better from a 1.5 Litre than any other size. Today I was able to reinforce that by tasting the Heidsieck magnum next to the 750 ml and the 375 ml. While I enjoyed all three bottlings the magnum was the clear winner. Smoke and rich fruit in the nose was balanced by clean acid. Notes of golden baked apple and hints of tart green apple make this one of the large house Champagne producers definitely worth getting into.
