K&L Notes

Can Mayol is one of our favorite Spanish direct import properties. Working organically, and employing biodynamic treatments on their property, they produce sparkling Penedes wines of real expression and stunning purity. The 999 is a blend of Pinot Noir and Xarel-lo Vermell (rare red skinned mutation of Xarel-lo), full of crisp, tangy red fruit flavors and without a hint of sugar (dosage) added. If you like your bubbly dry, this is one to try! Very interesting, delicious and a real overachiever at under $13! (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish Wine Buyer)

We're incredibly lucky that our buyer Joe isn't greedy. I could easily see this spectacular wine selling for twice the price without anyone blinking an eye. But instead we get this spectacular rosé, one of the least expensive in the store, for a minuscule price. I'm not complaining. It's brut nature but not austere. Lovely aromatics of fresh red fruit and exotic teas. Superbly drinkable and refreshing, plus at this price you can just throw it around without thinking about it too much. Gifting this to everyone until it runs out.

This was my go to bubbly rose last year and with the recent heat wave I was so glad it came back in. I was excited to see it and even more excited when I tasted it and thought it was even better than last year. Wild strawberry and some yeasty notes in the nose lead to a rather creamy palate with bright red berry notes, plenty of acid and tons of complexity. The finish is wonderfully dry and refreshing and goes on far longer than I expected. Seriously this little rose is silly good especially at this price, bring on the heat!!

Year after year, this is consistently one of my top Rose bubbles in the richer, darker style. Not to imply that this is a sweet wine. It's quite dry, but has great intensity of cherry and strawberry fruit, with a good textural richness on the palate. Recently, Loxarel has begun to vintage date their Rosat as well as their other wines, demonstrating the time in bottle which their wines receive before release. The quality here is fantastic at this ridiculously low price point.

The low price here may fool you into thinking this is just a simple sparkling wine but don't sell this substantial cava short. Bone dry in style with intense red fruits and a hint of spice, this greatly outperforms the price point. Add this to your list of great Spanish wine values to try soon.

Can Mayol's Loxarel 999 is quickly moving from hidden gem to popular favorite. While this wine doesn’t feature the native Trepat that sometimes makes it into Loxarel’s rosés, it is no less of an interesting, rustic sparkler. Bright red fruit with an exuberant effervescence, gorgeous mousse texture, and singing dry finish, 999 shows a complexity that’s shocking given the price. Another win for the DI program!

This is a super impressive value bubbly that delivers fun, delicious red fruit flavors with a dry, clean finish. At $13 bucks, this bottle totally over-delivers! Super recommended for any occasion.

Little by little, more folks are discovering this gem of a a producer of sparkling Penedes wine (they refuse to label it Cava, since cava can technically come from many places outside of the Penedes region where they are based). This is our go to household pink bubbly. It is unapologetically dry, yet so flavorful, explosive and authoritative on the palate, that it is hard to believe we are dealing with under $15 bubbles here. Tangy red fruits, perhaps a suggestion of hibiscus, combine with a nice bead and pleasing texture to make this such a great sparkling wine for the money. As this is a DI, I have been to the property, seen the care with which these vines are grown and the wine is made, and can only say that all of the Loxarel wines, including this one, have my highest recommendation.

I love Rose, and I love it even more if it has bubbles in it and only takes $12.99 out of your pocket. This sparkling Cava has quickly cemented itself as one of our everyday bottle of bubbles in our house. Super dry, with no dosage to hide behind, the palate is crisp and clean, notes of raspberry and dried cranberry. Pure, almost crystalline, delicious wine.

This is an absolutely wonderful, delicious Cava Brut Rose with distinctive red fruit characteristics of strawberry and red cherry, not only in the mouth, but in its high-profile aromatics. Dry, clean, and crisp across the palate, this Gem finishes with a mouthwatering set of flavors. The Bean has informed me that we need cases of this brilliantly produced Gem before the summer ends. It will be our house sparkler for however long it is around. You should not miss this beauty.

This is a bone dry and serious bottle of bubbly offered at a ridiculous price. With its sophisticated bead, laser like red fruit flavors of cherry and berry and steely finish, this would be right at home with the classiest of fare. Try this with surf & turf or sushi and don't be embarrassed by the price.
