The aroma recalls a warm summer day in the vineyard, with scents of wild berry, dried flowers and sage. The flavors are deep and distinctive, showing notes of smoky pepper, mineral and grilled anise, and the tannins gain power on the finish. Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Valdiguié and Cinsault. (TF)
The 2012 Lorenzo's Heritage comes from an alluvial bench of red gravelly soils, and the non-irrigated vines are at least 100-years-old. Another blend of Zinfandel, Carignan, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouchet, it was aged in 30% new French oak, it achieved 15.4% natural alcohol, and 600 cases were produced. Full-bodied with copious notes of charcuterie, roasted meat, Provencal herbs, lavender and spice box, this full, thick, juicy red exploits in a brilliant manner these old field blends of mixed blacks. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. (RP)
Bright ruby. Potent aromas of musky cherry pit, blueberry and bitter chocolate, with a smoky topnote that builds with air. Plush, round and sweet, offering smoky black and blue fruit, mineral and floral pastille flavors complicated by cracked pepper and licorice. Finishes smoky and very long, with pliant tannins coming on late. (ST)
The 2012 Lorenzo's Heritage comes across as massively tannic at this stage. Readers will have to be very patient. Black fruit, earthiness, smoke, tobacco and licorice all emerge over time, but the 2012 is a wine to lay down for at least a few years. I imagine it will still be pretty special at age 20. (AG)
