(made with 25% whole clusters, with 20% new oak): Inky purple. Smoky, spice-accented aromas of blackcurrant and cherry compote, with a hint of licorice in the background. Densely packed and weighty but showing unlikely energy on the palate, presenting gently sweet black and blue fruit flavors. Juicy acidity adds finishing clarity and bite, while dusty tannins provide grip. This wine should age slowly.
The 2011 Mourvèdre Bedrock Vineyard, from a site planted in 1888, presents a much more typical expression of Mourvèdre compared to the Two Acres. Dark red/blackish fruit, tobacco, menthol, licorice and sweet spices meld together nicely in the glass. In 2011, the warm microclimate here helped to give the wine soft contours and a lovely sense of juiciness. The 25% whole clusters are totally integrated.
