** Editors' Choice ** The vineyard has been source to Pinot Noirs from Copain and Drew, and this one, from Winemaker Jon Grant shows a somewhat Cabernet-esque interpretation. The wine is dark, tannic and medium-bodied, and quite extracted in the flashily ripe cherry and cola fruit that Monument Tree ripens so well in a cool, long hangtime year like 2010. Despite the richness, this is an elegant, ageworthy wine, whose low alcohol will delight many who critique California Pinot Noir for clumsiness. Give it at least six years in a good cellar.
Vivid red. Fresh raspberry and cherry on the nose, with suave spicecake and rose pastille qualities adding complexity. Juicy, open-knit red fruit preserves flavors show a seamless texture and pick up spiciness on the back half. Finishes with impressive vibrancy and focus, leaving floral and berry notes behind.
The 2010 Pinot Noir Monument Tree is laced with sweet red cherries, flowers, mint and spices. A nuanced, crystalline wine, the Monument Tree is delicate, refined and quite pretty. The use of 50% whole clusters adds an attractive upper register to the aromatics. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. (AG)
