Rich, balanced and full bodied, this shows exuberantly ripe, sweet flavors of blackberries, mulberries, dark chocolate and raisins, with notes of exotic spices. It will last for 20 years, gradually losing fruit and growing earthy and mushroomy.
The 90-year-old vines at Bacigalupi sustained their fruit through the August 2010 heat spikes, holding onto the coolness of the earlier months, yielding a wine that’s mouthwatering and brisk. The late-August heat brought out the sweetness of the tannins, creating a cushioned, gentle feel. A cellar-worthy zin, this would also be a comforting wine to decant for braised pork.
Ruby-red. Cherry-vanilla, blackberry, Indian spices and lavender on the nose. Ripe and expansive, offering sweet dark berry, allspice and candied violet notes and a jolt of cracked pepper. The spicy quality carries through on the sweet, lingering finish. (ST)
