The 2008 Syrah Cuvee Keltie (100% Syrah with 75% whole clusters, and aged 26 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new) reveals Hermitage-like characteristics of ground pepper, roasted meats, damp earth, Christmas fruitcake, blackberries and incense. Rich and full-bodied with loads of tannin and a backward, brooding personality, this sensational wine is meant for true connoisseurs who are willing to give it some time in the cellar. It should evolve for 15 or more years. (RP)
Sourced from cooler climate vineyards and fermented with 100% whole cluster, the 2008 Donelan Syrah Cuvée Keltie, aged almost all in neutral French oak, yields a spectacular bouquet of deep blackberry and crème de cassis styled fruits, smoked meats, and ground pepper that gives way to more nuanced notions of potpourri, spice and garrigue with air. Layered and complex aromatically, the wine is medium to full bodied on the palate and perfectly balanced, showing a rustic, slightly burly personality, gorgeous fruit, and a structured, tannic and much more mineral-driven finish than the initial impression would have you believe. While the fruit buffers the structure at the moment, I would cellar bottles for 3-5 years, and then drink over the following 15 years.
A beautiful young wine, notable for two things, its balance and generosity. Feels wonderfully structured, with superb tannins and a fine dose of acidity framing massive blackberry, currant, bacon, black pepper, mineral and sandalwood flavors. Bone dry, it's a superior Syrah that should develop over the next 4–6 years.
