Concentrated yet light-weight, fragrant and juicy, with aromas of toasted cumin, gingerbread and Earl Grey tea surrounding the core of wild blueberry and huckleberry flavors. The firm tannins stay in the background, allowing this to finish on the juicy side. Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache. Drink now through 2025.
The 2012 Proprietary Red Machete, a blend of 75% Petite Sirah and the rest Syrah and Grenache, showcases winemaker Dave Phinney’s longtime love affair with Petite Sirah. It spent 10 months in French oak (40% new), and possesses an opaque purple color as well as aromas of pen ink, blackberries, blueberries, and hints of oak as well as bouquet garni and lavender. Full-bodied with a savory, expansive texture, stunning purity, sweet tannin and surprising accessibility given the fact that three-fourths of it is Petite Sirah (which usually requires serious patience), the Syrah and Grenache components have tamed the Petite Sirah enough that it can be drunk early in life, but it will unquestionably be singing beautifully in 15-20 years as well.
