An absolute textbook example of very fine Blanc de Blancs that manages to be at once rich and remarkably graceful and light on its feet with suggestions of lemon cream and green apples sitting quietly behind its articulate, but never-heavy autolysis, Gosset's Grand Blanc de Blancs is a crisp, briskly balanced effort that sports an endless stream of tiny bubbles. It may be a tad too acidy from some situations, but it is a resounding success in the slightly chalky, slightly citrusy, slightly austere, classic Blanc de Blancs model and is certain to serve splendidly in most any aperitif setting. **Two Stars**
This wine’s flavors seem to be carved out of chalk, its fruit mellowed to notes of Marcona almond, toast and white mushrooms, its structure firm and classical. It’s a blend of chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, achieving its richness without malolactic fermentation, so there’s a sharp line of acidity adding a chalky grace note in the end.
Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs gives this Champagne its typical mineral edge that partners with open apple fruits and crisp acidity. The wine perfectly marries fruit and texture. (RV)
This is really quite elegant with its expressive yet cool nose of pear, green apple, Meyer lemon, white flower and plenty of yeast character. The sense of refinement continues onto the intense and attractively saline-inflected flavors that are supported by a firm but not aggressive mousse, all wrapped in a delicious and inviting finish as each sip invites the next. While this could be easily enjoyed now I would be inclined to allow it a few more years of cellar time first. In a word, lovely and in particular I very much like the texture. *Outstanding*
This is the current bottling of Gosset “Grand Blanc de Blancs” in the market and it is excellent, being the same cuvée I reported on last summer. This is a blend of 2010 and 2009 wines, with the bottling having aged four years sur latte prior to disgorgement and it was finished with a dosage of nine grams per liter. The additional year of bottle age has allowed the wine to really open up nicely, offering a fine bouquet of pear, lemon, bread dough, chalky soil tones, white flowers and a touch of smokiness in the upper register. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied and focused, with a lovely core, elegant mousse, brisk acids (from no malo) and impressive length and grip on the very well-balanced and complex finish. This is a first class bottle of Blanc de Blancs that is just starting to really blossom and which will continue to drink well for decades to come. (Drink between 2017-2035) 92+ points
A light, bright and lithe Champagne that has plenty of bright, toasty aromas with grapefruit and spiced lemon-biscuit notes. The palate is rich, smoothly fleshy and has attractive build and deep, lemon and grilled-nectarine flavors.
Based on the 2016 vintage and disgorged in September 2019, the new release of Gosset's NV Brut Grand Blanc de Blancs (which will arrive in the US later this year) unwinds in the glass with notes of citrus oil, warm biscuits, green apple and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, deep and tightly wound, it's racy and incisive, with a bright spine of acidity, chalky structure and a long, penetrating finish. As ever, this cuvée emphasizes Chardonnay from the Montagne de Reims. (WK)
A toasty version, with sleek acidity sculpting the layers of Meyer lemon peel, papaya, toasted brioche and lime blossom flavors. Tightly meshed, with a well-cut, lingering finish of smoky mineral. Disgorged May 2018. Drink now through 2024. (AN)
Gosset is Champagne's oldest producer, founded in the 16th century, and this blanc de blancs takes advantage of its well-established connections by sourcing Chardonnay from 15 different villages. The base wines are aged on lees after the primary fermentation but malolactic fermentation is blocked in order to retain the house's characteristic zinginess. The result is prickly, saline, lemony and tight, with some mouth-puckering apple, citrus and herb flavours. Light and focused, there's a touch of nuttiness on the finish. A great food wine, it could do with some additional time to mellow if you plan on drinking it on its own. (JB)
