Traditionally an exuberant, ripe style of Zinfandel, from a vineyard planted in 1900 that yields as little as one-half ton per acre. These dry-farmed vines were coaxed back into producing this much by owner Gus Gamba, who selected and retrained shoots from the crowns of many of the vines back up on to new stakes. The winery's tasting note: "This 2012 offering of Old Vine Gamba Estate Zinfandel is bursting with aromas of boysenberry, brambly strawberry, and ripe nectarine fruit. The color is a deep and brilliant garnet. The texture on the palate is silky and supple. This Zinfandel exemplifies the vibrant elements and complex flavors that are signature attributes of our 114 year old-vines. Enjoy balanced structure and flavors of ripe berry and cherry compote, laced with exotic spices. Notes subtle orange rind, clove and black currant engage the palate as the flavors mingle with clove and cardamom spice. Sweet, creamy toasted oak and elegant tannins lend lush mouth feel to this wine for a delicious, lingering finish."
