K&L Notes

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Nearly all of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 26 hectares, which are generally north facing and located between 300 and 600 meters in altitude, and all within the village of Abalos. This is very rare in a region where sourcing from various villages, and even sub-zones, is more the norm. 2007 was a fresh vintage in Rioja, with marked Atlantic climactic influence and wines that show a great balance between generous fruit and bright acidity--it's a vintage that perfectly highlights the Puelles style, creating a Reserva that is delicious now and should improve in the cellar for at least another several years.

The Bodegas Puellas Rioja Reserva is a wonderful dry red, with depth and complexity that come with age. Juicy aromas of black cherry and stewed strawberry comingle with leather, sweet tobacco and dill. An aromatic but dry, lean expression of Rioja, with subtle dried cherry, cassis and cinnamon on the palate. Very versatile with softer tannin and bright acidity, this is a perfect dinner companion for a wide variety of dishes!

Wow...this is flat out a lovely bottle of wine which has developed beautifully and is in a delicious place right now after 8 years. Soft, sweet fruit with hints of cherries, black licorice, earth and herbs. The tannins have softened and are now in complete harmony reflecting perfect balance. Very impressive and great tasting wine for $20.00...

The Reserva comes from all estate fruit, with some older vines coming into play. Aromatically, the wine is more complex, with savory dark fruits and a hint of earth. There is a lovely initial hit of fruit on the palate, but with very good presence and consistent length, as well as the juicy purity of Puelles' fruit, a stylistic purity which makes these wines so crowd and food friendly. For under $20 it's hard to find Rioja with more succulent and delicious fruit than Puelles.

What has become some of my two favorite Rioja producers are Bodegas Puelles and the productions from the fabulous house of Bodegas Casa Juan Senor de Lesmos, which are DIs for us. This 2007 traditional style Rioja offers a lush and fresh presentation, with incredible balance and structure, a long and complex finish. This Gem drinks nicely now, but will age another ten-plus years. Rusty wants at least two cases of this Gem in our wine room for future drinking. ***** 14.0% ABV *****
    Drink from 2015 to 2025

Drinking beautifully now and is extremely supple with polished tannins and a pure expression of fruit. Lots of violets, purple and blue fruit, with a touch of savory earth and tobacco on the finish. Absolutely perfect with tapas and easy enough to sip on its own. A great Rioja to introduce friends to as well.

It is almost too easy to overlook this wine when we have the 1999 Gran Reserva on the shelf at the same time. That would be a huge mistake. This wine offer a freshness and power that the other does not have. While the red and dark fruits of the wine are starting to dry, there is still freshness that gives it some pop. It also posses the classic leather and spice of Rioja. Drink it now or hold for a while, this is another great deal from Bodegas Puelles.

This bright little gem of a rioja has dark red fruits with touches of cedar and blood orange. It still does retain some of the characteristics of the region, light saddle leather notes with fine spices and a good balance of acidity. An excellent price makes it even more attractive!

Great vintage for Puelles! Crisp acidity, bright, red fruits, and good tannin. Opened this the other day and was impressed with it's development, though I think this wine has the structure to age well over the next five years. I would love to try this with Paella!

This is one of the world’s only regions that ages wine FOR you, ensuring its quality upon release. This traditional technique means current releases can sometimes be 7-8 years old (such as this one) or more, and it shows in the vivid flavors. Dried red fruit, tea leaves, licorice, tobacco, soft acidity and persistent tannin make this ideal with lamb shank, Spanish sausages, or pork medallions!
