Pride can usually be counted on for big, flamboyant, optimally ripened wines, and, if this one is long on extract and depth, it is also just a bit firmer and more tightly structured than we have come to expect. It is very deep and generously fruited with deftly placed oak lending a trim of sweetness to it ample blackberry fruit, and while not wholly free of tannin and heat, it does not come close to crossing the line into excess. Dyed-in-the-wool fans of powerful red wines will find lots to like in it now, but it will hold up quite well with age and will not reach its best for a good many years. *Two stars*
This wine earns its high score by virtue of sheer richness. It’s enormous in blackberry, cassis, roasted meat, licorice, black pepper and smoky cedar flavors, and finishes dry and spicy. There’s a tannic toughness that resists the palate, and doesn’t seem likely to age out, so drink over the next few years.
