Saturated ruby. Exotic mineral-driven aromas of black and blue fruit liqueur, blood orange and Asian spices, with a sexy floral nuance gaining strength with air. Supple and expansive on the palate, offering sweet blueberry and cherry compote flavors and a touch of bracing acidity. Densely packed, lively and precise, showing outstanding power and cut on the strikingly long finish, which features dusty tannins and a hint of candied violet. (ST)
Powerful, ripe and well-structured, with floral wild berry and spicy smoke aromas, leading to complex flavors of blueberry, red clay and black licorice. Finishes with lively acidity and balanced tannins. (TF)
Even older vines have produced the 2012 Zinfandel Monte Rosso. This large, relatively high elevation (900 feet) vineyard was planted in 1886. Aged in 35% new French oak, this cuvee is another big, muscular Zinfandel at 15.2% alcohol. Ripe kirsch, black currant, underbrush, pepper, loamy soil and a hint of briery mountain fruit emerge from this deep, full-bodied, rich Zinfandel. It should drink well for a decade. (RP)
